The Best Snorkeling Gear Reviewed for 2023

Having the right snorkeling equipment can make all the difference to your underwater experience, and while you can often hire a snorkel set from the dive shop, it’s usually not the best snorkeling gear. Too often than not, the mask doesn’t fit properly, and the fins hurt your feet.

For many years due to hiring underwater gear, I was not a fan of snorkeling, and as a consequence, I missed out on seeing some of the best wildlife the ocean has to offer.

What you should consider when you buy snorkel gear

This guide provides all the information you need to ensure you buy top snorkeling gear, including reviews on the best snorkeling equipment and a comprehensive buying guide.

When buying the best snorkel gear, you have a choice of purchasing individual items or a snorkel kit.

Most kits will include at least a mask and snorkel set, but you can also buy packages that include snorkel, mask and fins.

For beginners and occasional snorkelers, these sets offer excellent value for money and often are a cheaper option.

By buying a snorkel mask and fins set, you will save money on each item, and this can make quite a difference to the overall cost. These types of flippers and snorkel set are carefully put together by manufacturers, so you’ll know that the underwater equipment will work well together.

Snorkel sets are perfect if you’re going on a holiday and want to take a travel snorkel set with you.

However, if you require a prescription snorkel mask or fins that will work well in strong currents buying individual items will almost certainly be a better option.

You also have the advantage of ensuring that you buy the best snorkel mask when you buy things individually and snorkeling flippers to suit your strength.

Snorkel Mask Buying Guide

Click here to go straight to the reviews of the best snorkel masks

When looking for the best snorkel mask, there are two styles to consider-

  1. The Traditional Style
  2. The new snorkel mask design which covers the whole face.

Whichever model you choose you will need to consider the following.

Skirt

The skirt is the most crucial aspect. This is the part that seals the mask to the face, so it needs to be comfortable and watertight.

Make sure you purchase a mask that is made from high-grade silicone as this will provide the seal and it will ensure that the mask is comfortable to wear.

Cheap snorkeling gear often uses rubber or plastic skirts, which become brittle and uncomfortable with use. They also leak which is never good.

Top snorkel masks often have a secondary skirt which gives extra protection against leaks. The advanced technologies used in some of the best snorkel masks use silicone skirts which are thinner and more comfortable.

The silicone is treated to increase the life span and reduce the damage caused by UV rays and salt.

The colour of the silicone is also something that you should consider.

Dark Silicone Skirt

A dark silicone that is opaque is better if you’re going to take underwater photographs as it reduces the glare. However, the field of view is narrower. So if you want to see more of what’s around, you chose a translucent or transparent silicone.

The Frame of the Mask

The traditional type masks are either framed or frameless. A framed mask can look more stylish as they are available in a wide range of colours.

The frame ensures that the skirt, lenses, buckles and straps stay in place when you snorkel, so these are the better option.

Frameless masks are usually cheaper and less expensive, but they don’t tend to fit as well.

They also have a shorter life span so although they look sleeker, they are generally not the best choice.

Straps and Buckle

Wide straps are essential for good snorkeling gear, as they help ensure that the mask fits securely. The straps should have enough stretch and flexibility that the snorkeling mask can be held in place comfortably and adjust to fit your head.

The buckle should also be considered, and top-rated snorkel gear usually has a push button release, so you don’t have to fiddle around to adjust the straps.

The placement of the buckle also makes a difference as the strap is easier to adjust if the buckle is away from the frame.

High or Low Volume

High volume snorkeling masks have more air space in the mask, which allows for a better peripheral view. Low volume masks are closer to your face and while the view is not as wide they are easier to remove water and clear while using if necessary.

Type of glass

Tempered glass is the safest type of glass to use underwater as it won’t crack or shatter. This type of glass is the only type that’s suitable for a scuba /snorkel mask as normal glass would not be safe to use while diving.

If a mask has tempered glass, there will be a stamp on the lenses which is sandblasted on and cannot be removed.

Plastic masks are prone to fogging, which can be annoying and often end up spoiling your snorkeling experience.

Normal glass should be avoided as it’s considered dangerous.

Lens choice

Snorkeling masks have different types of lenses, and top snorkeling gear will often come with coated lenses to prevent scratches.

In cheaper masks, single lenses are used. These have no frame across the bridge of the nose and are not available as prescription lenses.

If you need prescription lenses, you need to choose a mask with multiple lenses. Multiple lenses also give better peripheral vision and are the preferred choice by top snorkeling gear brands.

Lenses can also be tinted to reduce glare. Tinted lenses also give better visibility underwater as they filter out some of the light wavelengths.

Preparing your new snorkel mask

A new snorkel mask needs washing before it’s used to remove any residue from the manufacturing process.

If this residue isn’t removed, it can cause the mask to fog when you first use it, regardless of whether you use an antifoaming agent.

To wash your mask place it in a bowl of warm soapy water and apply a mild abrasive cleaner to glass lenses (don’t use an abrasive cleaner on plastic lenses as this will scratch them).

Once the lenses have been cleaned dry them using a lens cloth or a cotton cloth.

How to ensure your mask doesn’t fog

Snorkel masks tend to fog up while using them. Some masks will use anti-fog lenses. However, you can still encounter fogging. To prevent fogging, there are several things you can do.

The easiest and most economical way is to use your spit. Before using your mask, rinse it in seawater and then spit into each lens. Gently rub the spit around and then rinse again in the water. Put the mask on straight away, and you’re good to go.

If spitting into your mask is not something that appeals, you can buy an anti-fogging spray either here or at the dive shop.

Cleaning your mask after use

Although you may think that your mask is clean as you’ve been using it in water, it’s still essential to clean your snorkel gear after use.

Water from lakes, pools and the ocean often contains tiny particles or chemicals in the case of pools that can lead to mould and deterioration in your mask.

If you wear suntan lotion its essential to clean this off after use as it will cause the soft silicone in the skirt to go hard. This, of course, will compromise the fit not to mention hard silicone is never very comfortable.

After you’ve finish wash the snorkel mask in warm, soapy water to remove any dirt, it’s also important to dry your mask as leaving it damp will encourage bacteria to grow.

Make sure you use a cotton towel or cloth so as not to scratch the lenses. You then need to store your mask in either in a snorkel mask case or a snorkel bag as this will prevent it from getting scratched or damaged.

Cressi Panoramic 4 Window Dive Mask

An image of a black snorkeling mask by the best snorkel brand Cressi

Cressi is a well-established family owned company that has been around for over half a century. This Italian brand is renowned for its innovative technologies and wealth of experience.

Cressi is one of the best snorkel brands on the market.

Its tried and tested equipment caters for all levels of ability, and the company has an excellent reputation.

Features of the Mask

The Cressi Panoramic dive mask has four lenses two at the front and two side windows.

Its design ensures that you get the best peripheral view and maximum amount of light.

The glass is fully tempered, and the low profile design means that water can easily be emptied in the unlikely event that it gets under the lenses.

The skirt is made from 100% liquid silicone, ensuring that there is a tight seal while remaining comfortable.

The black skirt makes this a good choice for those who want to take underwater photographers as it reduces the light.

Due to its flexibility, the soft silicone skirt means that this mask is suitable for a range of face shapes.

The frame is made from polycarbonate and is therefore durable. It has an easily accessible nose pocket which provides excellent equalisation, and the ratchet styled buckles are simple to adjust.

The buckle attaches to the skirt and not the frame. This reduces the amount of stress that is transferred to the side of the skirt and provides better movement. It also allows for a better seal between the mask and the face.

Atomic Aquatic Subframe ARC Scuba/Snorkeling Mask

An image of a snorkel mask with anti reflective coated lenses by Atomic

The Atomic Aquatics Sub- Frame mask has two windows which are made from glass, and the adjustable strap has well-placed buckles.

The frame is extremely strong and robust due to the internal subframe on this mask. Its made from high-grade stainless steel and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

The internal frame not only provides excellent strength and rigidity it also allows for a much slender design.

The lenses are purple due to the anti-reflective coating, which reduces the amount of light reflection but increase the amount of light transmitted to your eyes. This is particularly useful if you intend to use this mask for scuba diving as well as snorkeling.

The visibility through the lenses is excellent and is both crisp and clear.
Objects in the distance are more defined than many other masks on the market.

The silicone skirt is soft and moulds brilliantly to a wide range of face shapes. The seal is excellent, and leakage is minimal if experienced at all.

This mask is an excellent choice for underwater photography and divers, particularly if diving at night.

However, take care when cleaning the mask as the anti-reflective coating scratches easily. Its best not to use any type of cloth and abrasive cleaners should not be used.

Phantom Aquatics Panoramic Scuba and Snorkel Mask

An image of Phantom Aquatics Panoramic Scuba and Snorkel Mask

This is a low volume mask which sits close to the face. It’s super easy to put on and take off due to the push button buckle, which makes this mask a great choice for beginners.

It has a wide strap and feathered edge, which is both comfortable and easily adjustable.

The lenses are made from tempered glass, and the side windows give excellent panoramic viewing.

The mask has a double skirt, so it seals exceptionally well to your face and leakage is minimal if experienced at all.

The durable frame is robust, and for the price, this mask offers excellent value for money.

However, if you have a broad nose, you may find this mask uncomfortable, especially if you wear it too low.

Full facial snorkel masks have been around since 2014, and there has been some controversy over their safety.

Please be aware that these types of masks are designed for gentle surface snorkeling and should not be used for long periods.

They should also not be used for underwater snorkeling or free diving.

It is vital to choose the best full face snorkel gear that is made by reputable companies.

Cheap replica masks should not be used.  If the air does not circulate properly within the mask, the levels of carbon dioxide can build up, which can be dangerous.

The big brands are constantly working to improve their designs, which is why cheap replica masks should not be purchased.

A full snorkel mask should have a separate breathing chamber and viewing chamber.

The breathing chamber seals the nose and mouth from the rest of the mask.  This ensures that the carbon dioxide is forced downwards, and then it can escape through the sides.

The best full masks will have an exhalation channel to separate the air exhaled from the nose and the mouth.

If you purchase a good snorkel mask from and reputable company and follow the precautions below your full face snorkel mask poses little threat.

Fit

Practice putting on your mask and taking it off.  Make sure it fits properly, particularly the pocket which surrounds your nose and mouth,  This is important as a good seal will ensure that the carbon dioxide you exhale is expelled properly through the snorkel and not re-inhaled.

Know the signs of Carbon dioxide

Early signs that your suffering from carbon dioxide include breathing difficulties, hyperventilating, dizziness and sleepiness.  If you experience any of these while snorkeling stop and take the mask off.

Have a snorkeling buddy

It’s really important whenever you go snorkeling to have a buddy go with you.

If possible, you should also have a buddy on the beach or notify someone where your planning on snorkeling.

Having a buddy means that if you encounter any difficulties in the water, there’s always someone to get help.

It can also help relieve anxiety and its much more fun to swim with someone else; four eyes are always better than two.

You should never underestimate the currents in the ocean, even if your a strong swimmer its easy to get into difficulties when swimming against a strong current.

So having a snorkeling companion is probably the most important thing to consider when going snorkeling.

The dry snorkel is excellent on this mask and its a great choice if you lack confidence under water.

Its is fog resistant and because the breathing chamber is separate from the main viewing lens fog is eliminated.

Best Snorkel buying guide with Snorkel Reviews

There are different kinds of snorkel but if you’re going to invest in your own snorkeling equipment I’d recommend A Dry top snorkel.

If you’re going to swim underwater, snorkel dry tops are the best.

They have a special valve on the top of the snorkel tube that completely seals out all the water. Nobody likes the taste of seawater, and there’s nothing more unpleasant while snorkeling than getting a mouthful of water; hence why dry top snorkels are so popular.

They are more expensive than other types of snorkel and slightly heavier, but I much prefer them.

Purge Valve

A purge valve allows you to blow the water out of the snorkel tube.

It’s a small valve at the bottom of the tube, and it makes it much easier to get rid of any water. Without a purge valve, you have to blow the water out of the top of the tube, which requires much more effort.

Make sure you prevent the valve from getting blocked by cleaning your snorkel after use. Sand trapped in the valve can cause the snorkel to leak, so it’s important to wash it thoroughly after any snorkeling trip.

Snorkel Tube

Every snorkel is fitted with a tube, but the most comfortable ones have a tube which is flexible. Flexible tubing allows the snorkel to fit to your face shape better. It also allows the snorkel to drop away from your face when it’s not in use.

Mouthpiece

The best snorkels can last for many years but you’ll probably need to replace the mouthpiece at some point.

The mouthpiece is usually made from soft rubber, and indentions from your teeth will eventually break through the material.

It makes much more economical and environmental sense to purchase a new mouthpiece as opposed to purchasing a completely new snorkel.

Cressi Supernova Dry Snorkel

An image of a diving snorkelThe Cressi snorkel is a high-quality product which has been designed to make snorkeling a delight.  It has a float mechanism which closes the tube when it comes into contact with water.

There’s also a Splash-Proof Dry Guard which gives double protection. There is a small reservoir at the end of the flexible tube which collects water.

It has a purge valve makes expelling the water quick and effortless.

The snorkel attaches to the strap of the mask with a quick release keeper.

To remove the snorkel, you can just push a button so that the keeper can remain on the strap of your mask.

The ergonomic design of the snorkel with its wide elliptical bore increases the air flow capacity. This makes breathing more comfortable while in use, and the purge valve means that you can clear any water instantly should you need to.

The body of the snorkel is made from flexible silicone, which is corrugated to reduce jaw fatigue.

The mouthpiece is replaceable, and it’s easy to remove, which makes cleaning simple and easy. Its made from a soft hypoallergenic silicone and its comfortable to use over long periods.

TUSA SP-0101 Hyperdry Elite II Scuba Diving Snorkel

An image of an orange scuba snorkelThe Tusa Hyperdry Ellite snorkel has a snorkel keeper which attaches to the strap of the mask.

It has a low profile dry top which prevents water from entering the tube. The dry top will close even if a wave splashes it so you will be completely void of water entering your mouth.

The elite version of the hyper dry snorkel is more streamlined with refined features such as the quick and efficient gasket. The gasket closes immediately when it comes into water.

For extra comfort, the snorkel comes with a comfort swivel adapter.  This makes it possible to slip the mask strap into the slit easily. The two-part construction allows the snorkel to rotate and can be attached in a horizontal position.

The high flow purge valve has a large diameter, so it’s quick and easy to clear any water remaining in the snorkel. Due to the swivel adapter, there’s no load on the mouthpiece which means it’s super comfortable to use.

The Comfort Swivel adapter makes it possible to slip the mask strap into the slit with no hassles. The two-part construction allows the snorkel to rotate, and it can be attached in a horizontal position.

The tube is flexible and made from crystal silicone with a hypoallergenic silicone mouthpiece which has been designed to reduce jaw fatigue and give more comfort.

The flexible tube allows the snorkel mouthpiece to swing away from your mouth when not in use, so it doesn’t annoy you by getting in the way.

The top of the snorkel is shaped to follow the profile of your face and when in use there’s very little drag through the water.

The mouthpiece is removable, and replacement ones are easy to purchase.

The snorkel comes in a variety of colours so you can be highly visible in the water.

What should you consider when buying the best snorkeling fins?

The first thing to decide when buying a pair of snorkeling fins is whether you want a foot pocket or an open heal.

Open Heal Fins

Open heal fins are a fantastic choice if you prefer to wear socks with your flippers.  Water socks will keep your feet warm if you are swimming in colder waters.

Open heal fins are also adjustable which means that they can fit more than one person.

Foot Pocket Fins

A foot pocket is more useful if you need to put your fins on in the water.  Adjusting a strap is not practical if you’re trying to tread water and put your flippers on at the same time.

Travel Snorkel Fins

If you’re buying fins to take with you on your holidays, then the length and weight of the flipper are important to consider. Short fins fit better in a suitcase or rucksack.
They’re also the best flippers for snorkeling around reef systems as longer fins can easily damage the coral.  Short fins are lighter and more comfortable to manoeuvre around the surface of the water.

You won’t be able to swim as fast with them on but they are the best travel snorkel fins.

For extra protection, the top also has a splash-proof dry guard.

The dry snorkel’s curved shape is designed to prevent jaw ache and muscle fatigue. Its ergonomic design means that it’s comfortable to use, which is handy for those longer snorkeling trips.

Short snorkel fins are fantastic if you’re going to take your snorkel and flippers on holiday. They’re shorter length means that they fit easily into a backpack or suitcase.

Using shorter blades can also help protect the coral, which can easily be damaged should you accidentally kick them.

It also hangs in a natural position if your swimming without using the snorkel.

The snorkel mouthpiece is one of its best features.

Its made from flexible, hypoallergenic silicone and includes bite tabs which are both soft and comfortable.

The snorkel is easy to release from the snorkel clip as there is a quick release tab. This allows the snorkel to slide on or off the strap of the mask.

Fins

The fins in this snorkel and fin set are trekking fins. This style of snorkeling fin is short in length, which makes it ideal for travelling.

They are also designed to be both powerful and agile. The foot pocket is soft and comfortable to wear with just bare feet.

The quick release buttons make them easy to put on and take off.

Although many snorkel fins have soft pockets, they can still hurt your feet when using for extended periods.

Your feet can also become cold in the water, which can make you feel uncomfortable in general.

The 3mm neoprene material in Seavenger socks conserves your body heat and adds an extra layer of cushioning for your feet.

This is particularly useful when snorkeling in the open water as the temperature of the water out at sea can be much colder than by the beach.

The material stretches in four directions and will keep your feet warm while in the water.

The socks are both reliable and durable as the seams are glued and then blindstitched. This type of stitching also minimises the water flow, so the socks maintain their strength.

They can be used for many water activities but are particularly useful when snorkeling. The sole has a dotted silkscreen which makes them non-slip and prevents you from falling, which is particularly useful when snorkeling from a boat. The surfaces on boats can often become slippery, particularly if they’re wet.

Even though the socks are designed to have a snug fit from the toe to the ankle, they are easy to put on under your fins. You can walk on the sand with them, which also protects the sole. This is particularly useful when the sand is hot from the heat of the sun.

ZIPOUTE Neoprene Diving Gloves

Your hands, along with your feet, are one of the first parts of your body to get cold while snorkeling.

Wearing gloves keeps them warm and offers you protection against marine life and coral in the water.

The Zipoute wetsuit gloves are made from 3mm neoprene material and give thermal protection, ensuring that your fingers stay warm in open water.

The flexible design makes the gloves easy to put on and take off, and you have good finger dexterity while using them.

The material is also anti-scratch, so you’ll be sure that your hands are safe from marine life and sharp objects.

They’re super comfy and I never go snorkelling without wearing mine.

I find the material is super flexible and I have no problem using my underwater camera while wearing them. The seams are glued and then blind stitched for extra strength and durability.

The underside of the glove has an anti-slip design which is useful when climbing back onto the boat as the side steps can often be slippery.

The gloves come with a 12-month warranty, so if you encounter any issues, there’s no problem getting them replaced or your money refunded.

Freegrace Waterproof Dry Bags

Leaving valuable possessions on a beach or boat unattended is of course not recommended, so what do you do with them?

These waterproof dry bags offer the perfect solution.

Unlike the roll top bags which are widely available and often fail to protect your things from the water, these free grace dry bags do work.

They’re low cost yet they are top quality and extremely durable. The dry bag offers maximum protection at an affordable price and is excellent to use during any water-based activity.

The Freegrace waterproof dry bag has a double zip that locks and seals your belongings and gives dual protection. Your belongings stay fully dry even when submerged underwater.

Waterproof Pouch

In addition to the dry bag, you will also receive a small waterproof black pouch. The pouch is 9” by 6.7” and is great for storing smaller items such as your wallet, keys and credit card.

The pouch is 100% safe to use in the water, and it also floats.  It has an adjustable waistline which fits sizes between 33.5” and 47.5”. You can wear it in several ways, and its great versatility makes it a useful pouch that can be worn by all family members.

You can wear the pouch around your waist, as a cross body bag or over your shoulder, so its use offers excellent flexibility.

Waterproof Phone Case

This set also includes a waterproof phone case. The size of the case is 3.9” by 6.7”, and it features a simple snap and lock fastener.

The case has clear windows on either side, and you can use all the features on your phone, while it is in the case. It comes with a neck strap, so it’s easy and safe to carry your phone while snorkeling.

Waterproof Camera Float

If your snorkeling with a camera this wrist strap will protect your camera from sinking while swimming or snorkeling.

It’s compatible with a range of cameras weighing unto 7oz or 200g. Compatibility includes GoPro, Pansonic Lumix, Olympus TG, and Nikon Coolpix.

The float lanyard can also be attached to keys, sunglasses, camcorders and other small items that you may wish to keep with you while snorkeling.

Its bright yellow colour makes it highly visible in the water, so you don’t have to worry about losing your processions.

Should you accidentally let go of the lanyard, it will float on the top of the water, making it easy to spot and retrieve your possessions.

The float slides easily over your wrist, and the adjustable strap fastens with a press stud ensures that it stays securely in place.

It also works well with waterproof cases such as those purchased for smartphones The float is made from a soft, durable material and its comfortable to wear over long periods.

I always use mine when snorkeling, and it’s one of the most useful accessories that I’ve purchased.

Rrtizan Adult Inflatable Snorkel Vest

Snorkeling can be tiring even for strong swimmers, so wearing an inflatable snorkel vest is excellent for prolonging your adventures.

You do not have to inflate The Rrtizan vest before you get in the water, so it makes it perfect for snorkelers of all levels.

If you’re more advanced, you can inflate the vest when you get tired by blowing into the tube. However, if you lack confidence or you’re a weaker swimmer, you can fully inflate the jacket before you start snorkeling.

Wearing a snorkeling vest gives you more confidence, particularly in open water.

Currents in the sea can be unpredictable, so a snorkeling vest will ensure that you stay safe even if you encounter difficulties.

The vest is quick and easy to use, and it only takes 15 seconds to inflate. If you wish to free dive at any point, you can deflate the vest, so it’s a great accessory to have.

It ensures your safety, but it also provides you with the freedom to fully enjoy your snorkeling trips.

The vest is lightweight, and it’s easy to pack as it folds up small so it doesn’t require much luggage space.

The waist and crotch straps can be easily adjusted through the buckle so you can ensure that the vest fits securely. The jacket is suitable for persons who weigh between 80-220 lbs so both men and women can wear it while snorkeling.

The waist straps and crotch straps are 60 inches in length, so there long enough for most people. The outer layer is made from a durable canvas, and there’s a strong PVC membrane.

It’s comfortable to wear, and it gives me peace of mind and confidence while I’m snorkeling. The vest is available in many bright colours, so it also makes you visible in the water.

There’s also a Rrtizan vest available for children which you can buy here on Amazon.
